Commentaries on the Isha Upanishad Since January 2008
Detailed study of Isha Upanishad.
These weekly classes on Sunday have been led by Sraddhalu Ranade since January 2008 in M.P. Pandit House in Pondicherry when another major class on the reading of Savitri was over. The Upanishadic expression takes Symbolic Truth of Veda into a form that begins to touch the mind. The very name Upanishad means to sit near by, to sit in closeness. Literaturely, in its deeper sense it represents an inner communion with the Truth that seen, sensed, perceived, felt and remain in that closeness and communion.

This programme is much appreciated by a faithful group of regular attenders.
In January 2008 the programme of the Mother’s recorded talks was resumed, also on Tuesday afternoons, with recordings of the Mother’s Commentaries on the Dhammapada. She took up study of this important Buddhist text with the young people of the Ashram in the early 1950s, and we are fortunate that recordings are available of her luminous comments. The talks were of course given in French.
Leaflets providing the transcriptions in French and their translations into English are made available for each talk.
Other new regular courses are being given by Vladimir, on the Upanishads in the light of Sri Aurobindo’s writings, and by Nishtha on Sanskrit grammar.
All readers of Invocation are welcome to participate in all Savitri Bhavan activities, if they happen to be in the area.
New publications
Recently we were able to publish Tamil and French translations of a talk by Sraddhalu Ranade entitled "Auroville, Human Unity and the Future of Mankind". A limited number of copies are available free on request.

Statue of Sri Aurobindo
The last time that Dr. Karan Singh was in Auroville, at the end of September 2007, he chose the location for installation of a large bronze statue of Sri Aurobindo, at the Main Entrance of Savitri Bhavan. The statue, like similar ones now standing in the Parliament Building in New Delhi, and in Sri Aurobindo’s birthplace in Kolkata, was prepared by a team of artist-craftsmen under the direction of Lalit Verma of Pondicherry. The beautiful statue was moved to Auroville under the auspicious rays of Guru Purnima, on the Mother’s birthday February 21st, 2008. Sri Aurobindo’s presence amongst us in this new form is deeply moving, and was celebrated on Auroville’s birthday, February 28th by a visit of a small group from the Ashram, including Managing Trustee Manoj Das Gupta accompanied by Jhumur Bhattacharya and others. We gathered under the trees in front of the statue for reading passages from Savitri for half an hour. Later our guests enjoyed visiting the special exhibition prepared for Auroville’s 40th birthday, in the main building. This was a deeply moving and happy occasion for all. A photograph of the statue appears as the frontispiece of this issue of Invocation.
Construction
During this period too, the new wing of Savitri Bhavan has been nearing completion, financed by a Grant from the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resources, under the SAIIER Development Scheme. Chairman of the Auroville Foundation, Dr. Karan Singh, performed the official inauguration on the morning of Sunday March 30, 2008, as well as dedicating the statue.

How can we prevent Auroville becoming “a second Goa”

Home > Journals & Media > Journals > Auroville Today > Archive copies Auroville Experience The current issue April 2008

The April 2008 issue of Auroville Today deals with Auroville's guests and visitors. The past guest season has been the busiest by far. The tensions it has generated in Aurovilians and visitors alike is raising searching questions like, what are our expectations of visitors and guests? What can they bring? Can we do more for them? And how can we prevent Auroville becoming, as one Aurovilian put it, “a second Goa”? Closely related to this issue are the newly developed Matrimandir access policies.

In this issue we also portray two units: AVITRA , Auroville International Translators; and Tree Care – a unit involved in arboriculture (the art and science of tree care). The article Showing promise deals with the community of Promesse, located on the Tindivanam – Pondicherry highway.

The article Russians in Auroville deals with another community: that of the Russians in Auroville – 48 of them, apart from the over two dozen other Aurovilians who were born in the former Soviet Union, but are now passport-holders of fiercely independent nations.

The issue further contains reviews of the exhibition Blue Invasion , showing the work of artists Monique Patenaude; a review of Kalidasa's play Shakuntala, or the Ring of Remembrance ; a review of the performance of the Auroville Renaissance Cappella with songs on the theme of Death and beyond; and a review of the Bharata Natyam performance on the Kaluvelli Siddhar legend, the ancient legend of how Auroville was predicted thousands of years ago by Lord Shiva himself.

In the section ‘animal care' we show the work of Auroville's Pony farm. The issue is concluded with a small reverie on Beauty in Auroville.

Here follow a few of the articles. We wish you happy reading. By following the links you are welcome to read a few of the articles. We wish you happy reading. Please subscribe if you want to read more, or ask for a free copy. Details are elsewhere on this web page.

Sri Aurobindo Integral Education in Orissa
1. The operational base of Integral Education activity in Orissa are the centres named as Sri Aurobindo Study Circle. Such centres, each independent of the other, conduct regular studies of the literature of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. The first two Study Circles in Orissa were established with the permission of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother in the year 1949 and 1950, one at Rairangpur(of Mayurbhanj district) and other at the residence of Sri Lalit Mohan Ghose, Bhasakos lane in the city of Cuttack.

2. Babaji Maharaj Sri Ramakrishna Das who had arrived at the Ashram, from Ayodhya in 1945 and Prof Kangali Charan Pati (Prapatti - as the Mother fondly named him) from Orissa in 1954, took up this work of organizing these Sri Aurobindo Study Circles with the permission of The Mother. Thus very rapidly an awareness of Sri Aurobindo's thought spread to the length and breadth of the state. The number of these centres currently stand at. Some of them are Registered Societies, some are Registered Trusts where as most are unregistered but serious centres developing the courage of conviction in the profound Truth of Sri Aurobindo's thought and vision. Some registered centres possess land ranging from few decimles to several hundred acres. Around 65 such centres have Sri Aurobindo's Sacred Relics installed as Shrines of vibrating inspiration of His profound philosophy which in the Mother's Words is one that aims "not at renouncing life but making life perfect with a divine perfection"…which "India has to show to the World now". The people of Orissa have been ignited with a luminous hope to participate in the great Change, the great Seer has declared.

3. At a stage, during the early seventies of the last century there arose a further urge to give a concrete shape to and translate this Integral Philosophy in life. There appeared to Prapatti four doors to enter- namely Education, Politics, Agriculture and Commerce. Placing it at The Mother's Feet he was instructed to "enter" through "Education". Thus was founded the base of opening 'Sri Aurobindo Institutes of Integral Education' under the auspices of the Sri Aurobindo Study Circles. Members of these centres visiting Sri Aurobindo Ashram regularly, observed the "Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education". They were inspired to start educational centres akin to this in Orissa. The first School was founded in 1970.Sri Rama Krishna Das and Prapatti provided the required guidance and supervision. In spite of numerous pitfalls and challenges many Sri Aurobindo Study Circles, especially the registered ones with landed property, launched into the establishment of these 'Integral Schools' attempting at their level best to impart education in the way envisaged by the Mother and Sri Aurobindo- taking it as a cogent means of translating the philosophy of integral yoga into actuality in the society.
