Auroville's handling of its ageing population

Home > Journals & Media > Journals > Auroville Today > Current issue > Archive copies > Auroville Experience > August 2008

The main topic of the August 2008 issue is dedicated to Sri Aurobindo. The main article is about an important new biography The Lives of Sri Aurobindo which has just been published in the U.S.A. Written by Peter Heehs of the Ashram Archives, it is the product of many years of painstaking research. Auroville Today spoke to him about the challenges involved in writing about Sri Aurobindo and presents a review of the book.
The issue also carries interviews with Dr. Karan Singh, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Auroville Foundation, and with members of the Auroville International Advisory Council. The Governing Board and International Advisory Council had meetings in Auroville at the end of July. These were their last meetings as their term of office will expire in September and October 2008.
The third main issue is Auroville's handling of its ageing population. In four articles we look at the many aspects of ageing in Auroville: how to age gracefully; the material problems of ageing; and we profile how two elderly gentlemen cope with getting older.
The issue further carries the last interview of Serge Brelin, given a few months before his untimely death; and reports on Women's Day 2008, and how nice it is to return from the West and be home again!
Here follow a few of the articles. We wish you happy reading. Please subscribe if you want to read more, or ask for a free copy. Details are elsewhere on this web page.

The year 1956 was a milestone in the spiritual mission of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, as it was on 29 February of this year that the Manifestation of the Supramental Consciousness took place. In the very first commemorative year of this momentous event, in 1960, Sri Aurobindo Society was formed on 19th of September with the Mother as the Founder and Executive President, "to make known to the members and people in general the aims and ideals of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, their system of Integral Yoga, and to work for its fulfilment in all possible ways and for the attainment of a spiritual society as envisaged by Sri Aurobindo."
The Mother gave the following Motto for the Society:
The book A Glimpse of the Mother's Love and Action published by the Society, describes the genesis and growth of the Society and the Mother's way of working, as she developed it in its formative years. Some Special Days in September 2008
3 September 2008 - Ganesha Chaturthi
Shri Ganehsa
This year Ganesha Chaturthi, the birthday of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha, will be celebrated on 3 September. In India all important tasks start with the worship of Ganesha -the son of the Supreme Mother and god of material knowledge and wealth - so that the work undertaken may be free from all obstacles. In his letters Sri Aurobindo writes:
"Ganesha is the Power that removes obstacles by the force of Knowledge;…"
"Ganesha (among other things) is the Devata of spiritual Knowledge."
Here is the Mother's first encounter with Lord Ganesha, as narrated by herself sometime during 1958:
"We had a meditation (this was more than thirty years ago) in the room where 'Prosperity' is now distributed. There were eight or ten of us, I believe. We used to make sentences with flowers; I arranged the flowers, and each one made a sentence with the different flowers I had put there. And one day when the subject of prosperity or wealth came up, I thought (they always say that Ganesh is the god of money, of fortune, of the world's wealth), I thought, 'Isn't this whole story of the god with an elephant trunk merely a lot of human imagination?' Thereupon, we meditated. And who should I see walk in and park himself in front of me but a living being, absolutely alive and luminous, with a trunk that long ... and smiling! So then, in my meditation, I said, 'Ah! So it's true that you exist!' - 'Of course I exist! And you may ask me for whatever you wish, from a monetary standpoint, of course, and I will give it to you!' "So I asked. And for about ten years, it poured in, like this (gesture of torrents). It was incredible. I would ask, and at the next Darshan, or a month or several days later, depending, there it was."

After the withdrawal of Sri Aurobindo in December 1950, the intellectual community of Karnataka had a lulling period

SRI AUROBINDONEAN MOVEMENT IN KARNATAKA: History cannot and should not be forgotten for the development of any organisation -- spiritual or social since past is the foundation, future is the prospective development and progress and present is the golden thread.

Sri Aurobindonean movement in Karnataka was ushered into existence in its seed form way back in 1914 by a few noted Kannada literary devotees such as Gnana Peetha Awardee Dr. D.R. Bendre, Halasangi Channamallappa, pen- named as "Madhura Channa", Shankar Gowda Patil, Dr. V.K. Gokak, Dr. R.S. Mugali, Sri S.S. Malwad, Sri N.K. Kulkarni, Simpi Linganna, A.V. Shastry, Dr. R.R. Diwakar, Sri. P.B. Naregal, Sri Nagaral, Sri Basappa Akki etc., through a small group called as Friends Group(Gelayara Balaga) under the leadership of Late Dr. D.R. Bendre.

Local study centres in different parts of the state sprouted themselves and restricted their activities only for the serious study of the new teachings and Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and to print and publish a few books and periodical magazines in Kannada in Karnataka. The devotees used to visit Pondicherry, then a French colony with hardships and used to return being temporarily charged by the spiritual atmosphere as well as the unique darshan of the enlightened Lord Sri Aurobindo and the Mother at Sri Aurobindo Ahsram, Pondicherry.

However, after the withdrawal of Sri Aurobindo in December 1950, the intellectual community of Karnataka had a lulling period for a long time for reasons best known to them. A few dedicated devotees of Karnataka who decided that Poornayoga is the only hope of man, straight way went to Pondicherry with the prior permission of the Divine Mother and settled there at Ashram. Some local study centres led by a few dedicated devotees as stated above continued their maintaining existence.

High Level State Centenary Committee: (H.L. S. C. C.) H.L.S.C.C. with Chief Minister, Karnataka as its Chairman was constituted by the Government to celebrate the Centenary of Sri Aurobindo's Swadeshagaman which event had taken place on 6th February, 1893 at Apollo Bunder, Bombay, when a vast calm surrounded him for the first time as soon as he touched the soil of his Mother land. Such celebrations were observed throughout the country in 1993-1994; another committee constituted by Karnataka Government in August 1997 for celebrating the 125th birth year of Mahayogi & Maharashi was merged in the in the H.L.S.C.C. only. The term of H.L.S.C.C. concluded on the completion of committed portion of the project at the complex. www.newrace.org/Aur_move.htm

T. Kodandarama Rao lived near Sri Aurobindo from 1921 until 1924

From: "SABDA eNews" mail@sabda.in Subject: Two journeys along the path Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2008 17:27:41 +0530

In this issue we introduce two books that, although very different in time frame, subject matter, and tone, share a common perspective in that both are based on accounts of personal journeys on the path of the integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
At the Feet of the Master: Reminiscences is the story of T. Kodandarama Rao’s stay in Pondicherry from 1921 to 1924. He wrote the book in 1969, more than forty years after he left Pondicherry, and it remains one of the few extant records of life during the early 1920s at what later became the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. It is a very personal story that describes how as a young man the author could not decide between the paths of political action in the independence movement or a dedicated life of spiritual practice. It was an issue of the Arya, which he had found on a library table in his student hostel in Madras that initially drew his interest, and eventually he felt the call to go to Pondicherry and meet Sri Aurobindo in 1920. What follows is an intimate account of the community life centred around Sri Aurobindo at that time, including vivid portraits of some of his fellow sadhaks, as well as descriptions of some of his inner experiences:
A kind of electric drilling was taking place in the head and there was felt the breaking of cells and loosening of knots in the whole being. Channels for the flow of Light and Force were being hewed out and what seemed to be metaphysical phrases when the Master wrote about the pouring of light and force, were becoming concrete experiences.

The other book, more of a philosophical treatment of the psychology of yoga, is A. S. Dalal’s Eckhart Tolle and Sri Aurobindo: Two Perspectives on Enlightenment, a comparison of aspects of Tolle’s teaching and Sri Aurobindo’s integral Yoga. The author relates the roots of his own spiritual seeking, which began when he was just a boy of fifteen, and confides that since 1951 when he became “an avowed practitioner of Sri Aurobindo’s yoga”, he felt no strong inclination to study any other spiritual teachings until he came into contact with Eckhart Tolle, whose experiential, psychological insights have been helpful in his practice of Sri Aurobindo’s Yoga. The longest section of the book compares the teachings of Tolle and Sri Aurobindo on such topics as ego, self, and being; evolution of consciousness; mind and the witness consciousness; mind, thought, and stillness; and the process of inner change. In the final chapter he writes of some insights that have surfaced as the result of his comparative study:
A revelational insight gained from Eckhart is about the role of the mind in concealing and distorting the reality of what we perceive.... What appears to the mind as inanimate is described by Eckhart as vibrant with incredible aliveness. Flowers and trees are described by him as _expressions of incredible beauty, stillness, and sacredness. He sees animals living primarily in the joy of being rather than involved merely in a perpetual struggle for existence as they appear through the mental screen. A human being is perceived by him as a beautiful though unconscious form of the One Being in temporary disguise that is thick or thin, depending on the transparency of the human form.

This short book provides an intimate picture of life in the early 1920s at what became the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. It traces the spiritual journey of its author from his college days in Madras to his first meeting with Sri Aurobindo in 1920. After completing his studies he returned to live near Sri Aurobindo from 1921 until 1924, and his account, written more than forty years later, includes details of the daily life of the community, reminiscences of his fellow sadhaks, and also descriptions of some of his own inner experiences attained under the guidance of Sri Aurobindo.

This book combines an account of the author’s own spiritual quest that led him to the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother with the experience of reading Eckhart Tolle’s book The Power of Now after decades of spiritual practice. It includes a long interview the author had with Tolle in 2002 followed by a comparison of Tolle’s teachings with those of Sri Aurobindo’s integral Yoga. The result is a scholarly yet very personally informed look at these two perspectives that eventually leads the author to new insights regarding his own spiritual practice.

Sharanam - an inspirational rural training centre
'Sharanam' is an inspirational rural training centre, presently under construction at the Lake Estate, nearly 10 km west of Puducherry. The project is part of Sri Aurobindo Society's village development programme for the two Panchayats of Poothurai and Perambai on the borders of Puducherry.
The design of Sharanam reveals a sensitive response to the cultural and climatic context of rural Tamil Nadu. It demonstrates the use of innovative and appropriate building materials and sustainable technologies in its construction. It integrates green building practices such as passive solar cooling, complete rain water harvesting and waste management.
Sharanam has served as an instrument for upgrading skills and development amongst the local rural population. For more information, visit http://www.sriaurobindosociety.org.in/sharanam/home.html
Some Special Days in August 2008
16 August 2008 - Raksha Bandhan
The festival of Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is celebrated this year on 16th August. On this day, sisters tie an amulet, the Rakhi, around the right wrist of their brothers, praying for their long life and happiness. Raksha means protection, and Rakhi - a special ornamental bracelet - is a symbol of the chaste bond of love between the brother and the sister. In the northern parts of mediaeval India, women used to tie Rakhi round the wrists of men they could count upon, regarding them as brothers. The festival is an occasion to strengthen the bond between a brother and a sister.
Here is a luminous answer from the Mother when someone asked about human relationships:
Q: What is the best relationship between two human beings? Mother and son? Brother, friend or lover, etc? All the relationships are good in principle and each one expresses a mode of the Eternal. But each can be perverted and become bad due to the selfish falsehood of human nature which prevents the vibrations of love from manifesting in their purity.
24 August 2008 - Sri Krishna Janmashtami
Sri Krishna, as a child
Janmashtami (also known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami) is a festival dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna to commemorate his birth on this earth. This year it falls on 24th August, and on this day during midnight, the whole story of Sri Krishna's birth will be enacted by the devotees in their houses and many delicacies, prepared out of milk and curd, will be distributed as prasad (food made sacred by offering to God) to everyone.
In his letters to sadhaks, Sri Aurobindo mentions about Sri Krishna:
Krishna as a godhead is the Lord of Ananda, Love and Bhakti; as an incarnation, he manifests the union of wisdom (Jnana) and works and leads the earth-evolution through this towards union with the Divine by Ananda, Love and Bhakti.
The boy with the flute is Sri Krishna, the Lord descended into the world-play from the divine Ananda; his flute is the music of the call which seeks to transform the lower ignorant play of mortal life and bring into it and establish in its place the Lila of his divine Ananda.
