The Uneasy Relationship Between Power, Politics and Law

by Ashish Singh countercurrents.org/2026/10/the-un…

"The Uneasy Relationship Between Power, Politics and Law", by Ashish Singh, examines how political authority and legal institutions have shaped societies from ancient Athens to modern constitutional democracies and international institutions. Through historical examples, including the trial of Socrates, colonial rule, India’s Emergency, apartheid and international conflicts, the article explores the tension between legal validity and moral legitimacy. It examines how laws can reinforce domination but also provide instruments to challenge it. Constitutions, courts and treaties cannot guarantee justice without institutional independence, political accountability and public participation. Ultimately, the legitimacy of power depends on its willingness to accept criticism and protect the rights and dignity of those it governs.

The Bogey of Communist-Islamist Machinations

by M A Baby countercurrents.org/2026/10/the-bo…

In "The Bogey of Communist-Islamist Machinations", M.A. Baby challenges the RSS narrative that communists obstructed the Ram Mandir movement through an alleged alliance with Islamists. He argues that communists opposed the demolition of the Babri Masjid while consistently resisting religious fundamentalism, including Muslim fundamentalism and Khalistani separatism. The article examines the role of communists and the RSS in the freedom struggle, Savarkar’s views on the two-nation theory, and the ideological parallels between Savarkar and Jinnah. Baby concludes that majoritarian politics threatens India’s secular democratic foundations and constitutional principles of liberty, equality and fraternity.

In making this case, HH Sankaracharya has cherry picked examples to suit his narrative. Russia and many heavily christian South American countries with many sects became communist. Kerala became communist and it was a very casteist society.

Right from the start of the second world War, Sri Aurobindo saw Hitler as the greatest evil, and therefore supported the Allies. He believed Subhash Chandra Bose was naive in his alliance with Hitler. If his INA had won, India would have come under German or Japanese rule. But many in the ashram supported Bose.

Nehru was clear, Gandhi ambivalent. Later he condemned Hitler, but his love everyone concept and ahimsa came in the way.

Sanjeev Sanyal’s Revolutionaries is a paradigm-shifting eye-opener. It shatters the narrow textbook view of India’s freedom struggle & reveals the massive, sophisticated, global revolutionary networks sidelined for decades. Must-read. @sanjeevsanyal @HarperCollinsIN

Heroes forgotten. Families mistreated post-independence. Records preserved by sympathisers. This gripping, deeply researched book is a necessary corrective to conventional history. Highly recommend Revolutionaries. @sanjeevsanyal @HarperCollinsIN

The decisive criterion is whether an organisation’s or cult’s foundational doctrines and practices implicitly or explicitly affirm the foundational Hindu metaphysical first principles based on Veda and remain substantially within Hindu religious framework. On that criterion, Sri Aurobindo, Arya Samaj, etc are within Hindu fold.

Moral emotions are not natural defaults. Love, truth, respect, guilt, compassion and self-restraint are civilizational achievements, developed over centuries through reason, conscience and moral discipline. My latest essay:

There was lot of say but needed to put something quickly readable. The idea was to focus on current state in social sciences with some background. I don't think there was any academic pre-conceived notion disconnected from reality. But the idea of Reconstruction is inspired from Yajur-Sama Veda synthesis.

Thanks a lot for the input. It came out of frustration of seeing extremes when integrated balance can be more beneficial. Which culturally and historically more naturally seen in Indic thought, unique in the world.

Is there any compilation of Sri Aurobindo’s social and political views.

Sir what I was asking was follow up to your tweet that is it that no one has complied his entire social and political view in book/books form. Got the answer. Thanks.

The Literary Genius of the Isha Upanishad: Shloka 4 Pada 4

तस्मिन्नपो मातरिश्वा दधाति

Translation: In That the Master of Life establishes the waters (by Sri Aurobindo)

This is a very Vedic statement with more meanings than one. Apas can be water or work depending on the accent. Swami Gambhirananda says that water in Vedic terms means works

Matarishva is Vayu’s description in the Veda and means Life. The allusion to the containing Mother principle is not accidental. Note also the sound ashva in the word which in the Veda refers to life energy or tapas.

Note also the use of ta-varga varnas, त, थ and द in the fourth pada though not as concentrated as the third pada.

Because of Isha being present everywhere the principle of Life is able to hold the works in the universe. The fourth Shloka is a magnificent description of Isha with the use of personification although the Isha is not a person

The Literary Genius of the Isha Upanishad: Shloka 5 pada 1

तदेजति तन्नैजति

Translation: That moves and That moves not (Sri Aurobindo)

Now we come to one of most poetically brilliant couplets of the Upanishads. Notice the velocity of rhythm as it picks up and slows, then picks up again. And we are back to the Anushtup Chhanda after the Trishtup in the previous one

Again, the root ejr- which implies vibration or movement, is used as in shloka 4. We see a repetition of three varnas from the first word in the second word or what is called the anaphora

Here we see again paradox or virodhabhasa when the teacher says that the Isha moves and moves not. Without this masterly construct how much poorer would we be

Book Review: Who Owns the Past? How Historians [Re]wrote India’s Past and Present 1870–2020 by Shaan Kashyap
by Bhavuk countercurrents.org/2026/10/book-r…

In this review, Bhavuk examines Shaan Kashyap’s "Who Owns the Past? How Historians [Re]wrote India’s Past and Present 1870–2020", a study of the changing interpretations of India’s history. The book traces the influence of colonial historiography, nationalism and political contestation on historical writing and school textbooks. It explores debates involving historians such as R.C. Majumdar, Mohammad Habib and Irfan Habib, while examining the relationship between academic history, popular fiction and public understanding of the past. The review also considers the role of cinema, literature and evidence-based scholarly dialogue in making historical knowledge accessible to wider audiences.
