Ibid., 291. Gwilym Beckerlegge, ‘Saffron and Seva: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s Appropriation of Swami Vivekananda’ in Hinduism in Public and Private: Reform, Hindutva, Gender, and Sampraday, ed. Antony Copley (New Delhi: Oxford University Press, 2003), 31–65, portrays a complex picture of reception of Vivekananda in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s cohorts, with reference to its own internal nuances and its key ideologues’ preferences. Thus, while the original argument of spiritual impoverishment and abstention from direct political activism relegate to the background, an idiom of emasculation and resultant search for certain cult of ‘manliness’ finds inspiration in selective reading of Vivekananda’s valorisation of physical culture. (The growing fixation with physical culture, however, was by no means a characteristic exclusively associated with Vivekananda, but was part of a far wider global history of the period with different cultural or regional manifestations.)
