Matrimandir Newsletter February 2008
A great Hall, empty – except for one vertical Light Ray striking a translucent crystal globe at its centre. A great white Space…dazzling. It is this Silent Place for concentration, this 12-sided inner Hall that the Mother saw in vision. Concerning the exterior structure she directed with flexibility the work of the Auroville architects associated with chief architect Roger Anger, selecting from various designs and models the one now in construction….The great Hall, 24 metres in diameter, will have 12 sides of white marble and a floor covered with a soft white carpet. At the centre of the Hall, at floor level, will be the Mother's symbol, with four of Sri Aurobindo's symbols standing at right angles from the centre petals of the Mother's symbol to form a square on which rests the translucent globe. From the zenith of the Hall, through an optical lens in an aperture in the roof, the sunlight will fall in a direct ray to strike the globe at its exact centre. When there is no sun, electric reflectors will send a ray – also a concentrated, not a diffused light – exactly there upon the centre of the crystal globe to provide uninterruptedly the presence of the vertical Ray. ‘ All is symbolic' , She said. Especially important in the Mother's vision is this play of the sun upon the centre, for this is the symbol of the Future Realization.
‘ And every symbol hides a living power' .
This then will be the place for those who are, as The Mother said, ‘ serious – serious, sincere – who want to learn to concentrate themselves '. Admitted in order to learn, they will remain there in the Silence, and in the Concentration. …for those seekers, the serious, the sincere who want to learn, there will be something of the initiatory…
It is clear that the Matrimandir is not to be a temple in the religious sense of the past. In the silence enwrapping the structure now one recalls the Mother's warning that it is not to become the place for a religion. “What I understood from the Mother”, the chief architect once told Matrimandir workers, “was that Matrimandir is to be a place, a receptacle in which to receive the Supramental consiousness-force. The Truth-consciousness. This is the starting point, the centre, the spirit of the city that wants to be the living embodiment of an actual human unity …Matrimandir, its soul.”…
The importance of building the Matrimandir is reflected in its precedence over all other permanent construction work in Auroville. The chief architect: “I understood from the Mother that Matrimandir, as a receptacle for spiritual energy, Force, is the instrument of the evolving Supramantal consciousness. That the city may be guided by Truth in all its aspects…an economy, social structure, education, arts, agriculture, industries developing according to Truth.”
* * *
The above passages were written in December 1974 and appeared in the January 1975 issue of Sri Aurobindo's Action journal under the title, ‘Matrimandir Meditation: The First Four Years'. The author was Seyril Schochen, an American disciple of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo who joined Auroville and was an ardent Matrimandir worker. By nature she was a poet and playwright. What she described then is what we can see today at Matrimandir. The vision was always so clear, so strong, even when there was nothing on the ground! Of course this was the Mother's vision and it had a certain tangibility given that Her words, Her description carried the power to convey what She was talking about. The early Matrimandir workers all shared the dream of Her vision, but none more clearly than the chief architect, Roger Anger, with whom the Mother spent many hours discussing the Matrimandir. The Mother wanted the Matrimandir to be built right away, and a high priority was given to its construction. Roger collaborated closely with Piero Ciccionesi, an architect in his own right who undertook the engineering and contracting of Matrimandir, and also Paolo Tommasi, to whom the Mother had spoken about the Inner Chamber very early on and who was much involved in the design for the Inner Chamber. Roger also had overall responsibility for the plan and design of Auroville, but for many years his major occupation was the Matrimandir in all its details. Though he lived in France , he came at least twice a year to Auroville to attend to the many issues that arose in connection with building an international township and the construction of Matrimandir. He visited almost every day and gave his attention to each and every detail. He never tired in his search for perfection and was constantly rethinking various details to see how he could improve them. The vision of the completed Matrimandir was always in front of his eyes and last September, he was able to see this dream finally materialized. And thank goodness for that, since it turns out that it was to be his last trip to India and Auroville: Roger left us on Tuesday, the 15 th of January, in France . During that final visit he said to someone here, “I have come to finish the Matrimandir.” From the moment he first presented the rosewood model of the Matrimandir under the Banyan tree in 1971, when the foundation stone was laid, right up to the moment he last set eyes upon the finished sphere, Roger's determination to complete the work given by the Mother guided him through the many obstacles that arose in the process. There was a brief period when he ‘withdrew', pursuing other works in France and taking some distance from what was at that time a divided Auroville, but he took fresh courage and returned to complete what he had started, finalizing a Master Plan for the city and giving a fresh push to Matrimandir's construction.
As a tribute to his long and intimate relationship with Matrimandir and Matrimandir workers, we offer a few photographs of him in action on the site, attending to the innumerable details that required his input. And we acknowledge our deep debt of gratitude to him for his immense contribution to Matrimandir and Auroville, and to the Mother for choosing him to be Her instrument. We shall miss him, and his strong voice that spoke always in defence of the Mother's vision of how the special atmosphere of the Matrimandir should be respected so as to allow this instrument of the new Consciousness can do its work in the world. Quoting again from the same article as we began with, by Seyril, “How was the Matrimandir an instrument for the spiritual evolution? Shri Madhav Pandit of the [Sri Aurobindo] Ashram described it in 1973 at the Matrimandir Workers Camp: ‘What the Mother's embodiment has been to us here, the full-fledged Matrimandir will be to the whole of humanity….In the course of her life on earth, the Mother has established links with many levels of cosmic existence. Each of these helps the parts of the cosmic being relate themselves to the Truth-light. This spiritual mechanism will also be embodied in the Matrimandir. Not only will the Truth-light and Consciousness radiate from the Matrimandir, but also the means of realizing them will remain dynamic. It will be a Lighthouse, a receptacle for the new Consciousness descending.”

A short work report
The red square in the North (Mahakali) pillar shield
True to her strong and often stormy nature, Mahakali's symbol marking the North pillar entrance of Matrimandir was fixed on the structure during the rain swept days at the tail end of the winter monsoon. The red square at the center of the large four-petalled disc was bolted in place above the steps on the North entrance to the sphere on the 14th of December. The four petals surrounding the central square were carried to the structure during breaks in the heavy rain and fixed in a few days by our unstoppable disc team. There was a reason for this push to work on through the rain: the President of India was coming to visit on the 22 nd of December, and all the work at the North pillar had to be finished and the scaffolding removed two days before her arrival. By the 20 th , all six parts of this special disc had been mounted. In the quiet and semi-darkness of that evening, the red-centered disc looked down on the North entrance -- a touch of personality added to the overall pattern of golden discs covering the Matrimandir.
The sunshine returned and the President, Mrs Pratibha Patil, did indeed arrive just before noon on the 22 nd . On her way up to the Chamber for a few moments of concentration she passed beneath this symbol. It looked so strong and sovereign with the bold red square at its center held by the wide golden petals.
Meanwhile, in the gilding workshop the centerpiece for the Mahasaraswati (West) pillar – a blue triangle - is well on its way to completion. This four-petalled disc will soon be put in place, completing the entrance shield on the West by early February.

On Friday 29th there will be collective concentration of 15 minutes in front of the statue

Arrival statue of Sri Aurobindo Savitri Bhavan :: 10:00 PM

A statue of Sri Aurobindo, which has been prepared in Pondicherry by a team of artist-craftsmen under the guidance of Lalit Verma, is expected to arrive in Auroville on the Mother’s birthday – Thursday 21st February – at about 10pm.
Under the rays of the full moon, Guru Purnima, it will be installed at the main entrance to Savitri Bhavan. It is expected to be in place by 11pm.
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Karan Singh for initiating the making of this statue and its installation in Auroville.
Dr. Karan Singh had intended to unveil the statue himself on February 29th. As he is unable to be in Auroville that day, everyone who would like to welcome Sri Aurobindo’s presence amongst us in this new form is welcome to come individually from 12 noon, Friday February 22nd onwards.
Flower offerings are welcome.
At 9.30 am on Friday 29th there will be the opportunity to join a collective concentration of 15 minutes in front of the statue, before the inauguration of the new wing.

Life has a spiritual culmination on this physical plane and not beyond

From: "SABDA, Sri Aurobindo Ashram" mail@sabda.in

The complexities of the modern world are often manifested in society through behaviour which is not easily understandable to the reasoning, surface mind. We see countless examples of the conflicting emotions and actions of human beings, unable to make their way among the labyrinthine choices of modern life and at a loss to comprehend their deepest selves. Modern psychology has developed along various lines in its efforts to unravel these threads of human malaise. In one of the new books introduced below, Sri Aurobindo and the Future Psychology, A.S. Dalal covers a wide spectrum of topics in the field of psychology with his gaze fixed on emerging psychological paradigms that he believes will eventually lead us to a psychology of the future, firmly rooted in the vision of Sri Aurobindo.
One example is his essay “Self-Awareness in Psychology and in Sri Aurobindo’s Yoga” where he brings out some of the parallels as well as differences between modern psychology and yoga regarding self-awareness:
One fundamental difference between the awareness aimed at in yoga and the insight fostered by analytical and other psycho-therapeutic methods consists in the effective power for change which the awareness brings.…Intellectual awareness, which belongs to mental consciousness, is relatively ineffective because of the relative impotence of the will-force – the mental will-power – associated with it.…In yoga, on the other hand, the aim is to attain a progressively more evolved state of being than that of mental consciousness, thereby attaining a progressively greater force of one’s being. To attain fullness of being, therefore, is not only, as previously stated by Sri Aurobindo, to be fully aware of one’s being, but also to possess its full force.

Described by its author as a supplement to his earlier book A Greater Psychology, this collection of essays, which brings together both new and previously published articles, continues to examine and elucidate the psychological writings of Sri Aurobindo anthologised in that previous work. Here the author presents Sri Aurobindo's thoughts on such topics as the relationship between yoga and psychology, the concept of the unconscious in psychology, the relation between such terms as "person" and "personality" in the integration of the being, an integral view of cosmic consciousness, and the concept of the psychic being as a major contribution made by yogic experience to psychological thought and spiritual practice. The book also includes contributions by three experienced practitioners who have attempted to apply Sri Aurobindo's psychological thought in their clinical work.
Sri Aurobindo in Surat
— Narrated by Hiranmayi Publisher: Sri Aurobindo Centre, Surat Binding: Soft Cover Pages: 208 Price: Rs 175
Published to commemorate the centenary of Sri Aurobindo’s 1907 visit to Surat for the All India Annual Convention of the then Indian National Congress, the book acquaints the reader with the major political players of the day and the issues of contention between the Moderates and the Nationalists. Using the words of Sri Aurobindo, convention participants, and observers, as well as facsimile copies of Indian newspaper reports, the author unfolds the dramatic events before and during the convention, when all efforts at compromise and reconciliation between the two groups failed, leading to the climactic moment when the convention dissolved in an uproar of charged emotions. Sri Aurobindo’s leadership in awakening the country to the demand for swaraj is the primary focus of this narrative retelling of the Surat Congress Convention
Truth: Nothing Else Than
— A. K. Ray Publisher: Srinvantu, Kolkata Binding: Hard Cover Pages: 187 Price: Rs 75
A mathematician and a poet, the author of this collection of philosophical essays explores some of the profoundest questions man can ask himself about the creation and the nature of the Absolute as the creator. He adds interest and depth to his own observations by examining the thought of Leibniz, Descartes, Spinoza, Hegel, and Whitehead, all eminent philosophers and some also known as mathematicians and logicians, but it is in Sri Aurobindo's philosophical thought that he finds the widest perspective and most comprehensive view of life. Additional essays include "Entering the Hall of Logic", which delves into the philosophy of logic as it relates to thought and language, and "Into Language: An Introspection", which provides a brief philosophical look at grammar.

130th Birth Anniversary of the Mother - 21 February 2008

130th Birth Anniversary of the Mother - 21 February 2008
The Mother
On 21 February 2008 we celebrate the Mother's 130th birth anniversary. The Mother's room will be open for darshan for devotees on that day. There will also be a collective meditation in the Ashram from 6:00 to 6:30 am.
The Mother came to the earth with a great spiritual mission. Sri Aurobindo has said that:
"The Mother comes in order to bring the Supramental", and "Her embodiment is a chance for the earth-consciousness to receive the Supramental into it and undergo the transformation necessary for that to be possible."
The Mother first met Sri Aurobindo in the year 1914. After their meeting, Sri Aurobindo said that he had never seen anywhere a self-surrender so absolute and unreserved as that of the Mother. Later, Sri Aurobindo mentioned about the significance of the presence of the Mother on earth in the following words:
"The great work of the Avatar is to manifest the Divine Grace upon earth. To be a disciple of the Avatar is to become an instrument of the Divine Grace. The Mother is the great dispensatrix - through identity - of the Divine Grace with a perfect knowledge - through identity - of the absolute mechanism of Universal Justice. And through her mediation each movement of sincere and confident aspiration towards the Divine calls down in response the intervention of the Grace."
The Mother herself has emphasised that "I am on earth because it is on earth that the divine work must be done, and for no other reason."
29 February 2008 - Anniversary of the Supramental Manifestation
The year 2008 is also the year of the 13th leap-year anniversary of the Supramental Manifestation which took place on 29th February 1956. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's rooms will be open for darshan for devotees on that day.
Here is a compilation of extracts from Sri Aurobindo and the Mother on the significance of the event of Supramental Manifestation in the evolutionary history of the Earth The Significance of the Supramental Manifestation">

Visit by Students of SAIMC, New Delhi - 21 to 29 January 2008
A view of the students of SAIMC, New Delhi
A group of 75 students from the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Mass Communication (SAIMC), New Delhi, - a unit of Sri Aurobindo Society - visited the Ashram on a study tour. A camp was organised for them at the Beach Office of the Sri Aurobindo Society, Puducherry, from December 21 - 29, 2007. The students were accompanied by the entire faculty from the department of Journalism (English & Hindi), Advertising & PR, Audio Visual Communication and Creative Photography.
The camp was aimed to help empower the students find a higher purpose in their lives in the light and vision of Sri Aurobindo Society. The different sessions arranged for the students were to ignite their minds to ponder and connect with the divine spark that exists within each one.
Several sessions were arranged on a range of topics that was related to the course and life in general. The inspiring talk by Vijaybhai on day one kindled the minds of the students and forced them to think about the deeper meaning of life and their role in it, and set the tone for the rest of the sessions.
Shri Sraddhalu, speaking on the topic "Nation Building"
As days unfolded, the students were exposed to thought-provoking talks by Shri Robi Ganguli on Creative Photography, on tackling difficult issues in life by Dr. Alok Pandey, on Art & Beauty by Shushanto, on the origins of Sanskrit by Dr. Sampad, on the science of life by Maitreyee and on nation building by Shri Sraddhalu.
A daylong trip to Lakeland was an exhilarating experience for the students. Given an option of either cycling or traveling by bus, the more adventurous ones took to cycling. The Lakeland trip for the students was towards getting an understanding into the kind of work that the Society is undertaking towards sustainable development of villages. A half-day session conducted by Maitreyee on awakening to a contact with Nature gave a better understanding to the students on environmental issues.
At the end of the entire trip, a majority of the students had been exposed to think on the inner meaning of life. It was very evident at the feedback session with Vijaybhai at the end of the camp, where some of the students experienced emotional moments as their entire perception of life had undergone a sea change in a few days. The students shared that the sessions at the camp had thrown a lot of questions about the aim in life and how to lead and that it may take a lifetime to answer some of the questions.
Although the students enjoyed all the sessions and learnt from each one of them but one session that stood out as the most popular with a majority of the students is on nation building by Shri Sraddhalu. It was an eye opener for the students to view a number of issues about their own country in a totally different light.
Hopefully the first step towards a journey of self which has been initiated through this camp will stand the youngsters in good stead in times of need.
A Few responses from the students:
"The sessions at the camp helped me to gain confidence and move on with tons of self confidence and motivation."Ena Jain, Student of journalism.
"Self development for me means to be a simple person, confident and believing in myself and being happy. For only a happy person can spread the feeling around." Sahiba Kaur Sachdev, Student, Advertising and PR.
"I had a great learning experience at the sessions as they were conducted by intellectuals who in spite of their wealth of knowledge were so down to earth and simple." Nyonika Saikia, Student, Journalism

London (U.K.)
It is the practice in London to mark the house where a person of eminence has lived by putting up a plaque bearing the name of the person, the period of his living in that house and the reason for which he is famous. As per this practice, a commemorative blue ceramic plaque was put up by English Heritage, a non departmental body of the British government, on No. 49, St. Stephen's Avenue in Shepherd's Bush, for this is where Sri Aurobindo had lived for three years - 1884 - 1887 - while attending St. Paul's School. The ceremony took place on 12 December 2007, and began with a brief speech by an historian from English Heritage, followed by a speech by Dr. Girija Shettar on Sri Aurobindo's life, particularly about the years he spent in England. The plaque was unveiled by Ms. Mounnou Bhandari, who grew up in the Ashram and was privileged to have been in close contact with the Mother from her childhood. She is also the granddaughter of Rishabhchand, who was one of the early sadhaks of the Ashram and who was asked by the Mother to write a biography of Sri Aurobindo. Mounnou Bhandari recited some stanzas from Guru Stotra in Sanskrit before she unveiled the plaque. The unveiling ceremony, which was attended by about 35 people, was followed by a brief meditation.

Delhi branch -Navakriti School
An orientation programme on what constitutes the essence of integral education was held for parents on 9 December 2007. In an interactive process, using elements of theatre, dance, music and poetry, Navakriti teachers demonstrated how teachers and parents were led to increasing self-awareness and self-enquiry in the process of facilitating the child's growth and learning. This in turn creates an environment for the child's joyful awakening into exploration and enquiry of the self and the world. Partho and Vijaybharti from Sri Aurobindo Institute for Integral Education and Management spoke to parents about the nature and necessity of integral education. The urgent need of the hour is to change people's mindset and re-evaluate conventional education which tends to exclusively focus on academic goals and achievements. This creates a uni-dimensional way of being in which large parts of the child's being remain ignored and neglected. The integral system on the other hand aims at facilitating the emergence of a creative, independent, joyful, sensitive and conscious learner who, with the passing years, becomes more and more clear about what work he has come to do in the world.
