2nd International Auroville Dialogue
Knowledge, Business and ConsciousnessManifestation of Consciousness through Business in the Knowledge Society
AIMS and Objectives
Day one
The main aim of the international city of Auroville is to help to raise humanity's consciousness. Auroville has been struggling with this "impossible task" for almost 40 years, since it was founded in 1968.
In a first Seminar in September 2005, we explored the existence of "another consciousness" among a small minority of businesses worldwide. Our conclusion was rather positive. This minority does exist.
And the surprise has been to assist at the very dynamic encounter between the Auroville Business community and this new type of business community worldwide.
This has brought the Auroville community to rethink itself, its relation to economics, to its future, and to the world business community. It has even set in motion the project to set up a new type of business school in Auroville.
Now in a second phase we would like to focus on the knowledge society because this is leading us to a new economy.
In the EU the knowledge society is an important policy objective, called the "Lisbon strategy". The goal is to make the EU the most competitive knowledge economy before 2010, while being sustainable and socially-inclusive.
In India a "National Knowledge Commission" has been set up recently and has Dr Phuspa Bhargava as one of its leaders. Dr Phuspa Bhargava will be present and will be able to explain the objectives and methods of this new Indian National knowledge Commission.
Here are some of the questions that we face in the EU, in India, and worldwide. If this knowledge economy is post-capitalist (Peter Drucker) and post-industrial, do we not need another level of consciousness to be able to manage it properly?
If knowledge is not traded but shared, because we never lose the knowledge we give to another person, are we ready to build a "free share" economy in the XXIst century?
Are we ready to shift from a win-lose market strategy to a win-win network strategy for our businesses?
Are our leaders ready to shift from a command and control approach to an enabling and connecting approach to the knowledge business?
Are we aware that secrecy and patenting will disappear or be deeply modified in a society where transparency is increasing?
Are we aware that the value creation system will be different in this new knowledge society?
Are we aware that the tool of production is no longer the machine as in the industrial society? It is the human brain which produces knowledge. And so every evening, workers go home with their tool of production

Education Camp - Study And Dialogues Cum Workshop: 20-28 May 2007
Participants of the Camp
This year's Education Camp-cum-Workshop was organised at the Beach Office from 20 to 28 May 2007. Fifty-two participants including teachers, principals, school management persons, parents and educationists from 10 States of the country participated in it. The objective of the Camp was to introduce the principles of Integral Education as envisioned by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, and also how to impart it to children. The programme of the Camp covered, in a balanced way, both the theory and the practical aspects of Integral Education.
On the first day, after an introduction by Vijaybhai to the nature of the Camp, Dilipbhai and Kalaben explained the way in which education takes place in the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education (SAICE) of the Ashram, right from the KG level. From the next day onwards, the morning sessions started with the "Exploring Integral Education" by Shivakumar where the principles of integral education were introduced by first exploring the various parts that constitute the child - the physical, vital, mental, psychic and spiritual - and then explaining how each part has to be developed so as to make the education complete and integral for the child. Maitreyee took up the topic of character development in children with examples drawn her interaction with children.
Dr. ALok Pandey, speaking on "Qualities of a Teacher"
Dr. Alok Pandey, through his session on "Qualities of a Teacher", brought out the core values of a teacher and how the Supreme Lord himself shines as a best example of this. The sessions on "Application of Integral Education" by Surekha-di, and "Making A Transition to Integral Education" by Sraddhalu delved into the problems faced by the teaching community in implementing Integral Education, and there was a free sharing of many suggestions towards solving them. The session on Sanskrit by Dr. Sampadananda Mishra discussed the importance of the role of Sanskrit in nation building and also revealed the beauty, charm and the wonders of Sanskrit language with numerous examples taken from the vast body of Sanskrit literature available to us.
Project Method sessions
With a view to offer an alterative to the present cumbrous learn-by-rote system, a dynamic learning process through project method was introduced in the afternoons. After an introduction by Uttama on the 'Project Method' the participants divided themselves into smaller groups in order to try out the project method under the general topic "Human Body", covering the following subjects, with their respective facilitators:
Language Teaching (noun, verbs, simple sentence construction, creative writing in English) - AnjanabenScience, Sense development - MaitreyeeArt & handicrafts - Sushanto & Abhipsa Dance, music and free expression through the body - Surabhi
Physical education & Faculty development activities
The afternoon sessions of the Camp saw them at their eager most, as the participants were introduced to many interesting physical education activities like obstacle race, relay race, co-operative games etc. which could be played by children in a small space or even inside a small hall. In the early mornings, there were sessions of Yogic exercises to tune their mind and body, and the uplifting chanting of Sanskrit shlokas. The participants were also taken to the KG and Primary sections of the Ashram school and shown the educational aids used by the teachers there. During a separate session, Shankar, a teacher from Auroville, explained the important things to be taken care of by a KG teacher and also demonstrated how a KG class is to be conducted. Two of the Ashram ex-students, Devdip and Tejas, candidly shared with the participants their experience as students of the Ashram's Centre of Education.
"Nature Awareness" by Richard
There was a special session on "Teaching Maths" by Dilipbhai, where he showed several games and techniques through which Maths could become an endearing subject to children. The participants also had a session with Richard on "Nature Awareness" and got a chance to enjoy the splendour of early morning Sunrise over the Bay of Bengal in Puducherry. Visits to the Ashram departments and Auroville, the International Township, were also arranged.
"I Have a Dream" - workshop on Theatre
On the last two days, a short workshop on theatre under the title "I Have a Dream…" was conducted by Rashi, an accomplished theatre artist, and assisted by Vivechana. It provided an opportunity to the participants to bring out their innate abilities spontaneously, by shedding off the obstructing self-inhibitions. Another session, on "The Prolonged Miracle" by Trupti, extended their sense of wonder by opening up their senses to the geometrical wonders hidden in Nature and in human body.
As the Camp drew to a close, many felt within themselves a change of perspective towards children and Education itself, and all the participants resolved to make a conscious attempt at implementing the vision of Integral Education at their places, in whatever way possible, on their return. 135th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo: 15 August 2007
Sri Aurobindo
This 15th of August is a special day for all of us. It is Sri Aurobindo's birthday as well as the birthday of free India. In a message to India given on the eve of its Independence, Sri Aurobindo mentions about the coincidence of this day with his own birthday as:
August 15th is my own birthday and it is naturally gratifying to me that it should have assumed this vast significance. I take this coincidence, not as a fortuitous accident, but as the sanction and seal of the Divine Force that guides my steps on the work with which I began life, the beginning of its full fruition.
We present here the full text of the Message given by Sri Aurobindo on the eve of India's Independence to All India Radio where he speaks of his five dreams.
Here is an extract from Sri Aurobindo, where he powerfully emphasises the course India must take in order to fulfil its role & mission:
India of the ages is not dead nor has she spoken her last creative word; she lives and has still something to do for herself and the human peoples. And that which must seek now to awake is not an anglicised oriental people, docile pupil of the West and doomed to repeat the cycle of the Occident's success and failure, but still the ancient immemorable Shakti recovering her deepest self, lifting her head higher towards the supreme source of light and strength and turning to discover the complete meaningand a vaster form of her Dharma.
It is our happy privilege to work for a new India and a new world according to the vision of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

The content of the one-year course is fashioned to channelise the talent of the students towards moulding an outstanding photographer. Towards achieving this, the students will be exposed to different art forms, like a visit to the art gallery, a music concert to help them evolve as more sensitive human beings. In the very first anniversary year of this momentous event, on 19 September 1960, Sri Aurobindo Society was formed with the Mother as the Founder and Executive President, "to make known to the members and people in general the aims and ideals of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, their system of Integral Yoga, and to work for its fulfilment in all possible ways and for the attainment of a spiritual society as envisaged by Sri Aurobindo."
The Mother gave the following Motto for the Society:
The book A Glimpse of the Mother's Love and Action published by the Society, describes the genesis and growth of the Society and the Mother's way of working, as she developed it in its formative years. The Society has been growing over the years and has now more than 300 Centres and 70 Branches all over India and abroad. More details of the various activities of the Society are given here http://www.sriaurobindosociety.org.in/activity/activity.htm
On this day we rededicate ourselves to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and to the realisation of the great future they have revealed to us.
Annual Seminar of the Women's Council - November 2007: "Self-Transformation"
The very purpose of our life on earth is to transform ourselves into a being better, purer, higher, deeper and wider in consciousness so that our gross animal-human nature is transformed into the more beautiful human-divine nature. If we are not attuned to the process, the natural rhythmic force of evolution, we are pushed by the circumstances to move forward fast and thereby suffer due to friction with our natural and human elements around us.
All those who are interested in a conscious, harmonious and progressive self-transformation are invited to join us at the Society's Beach Office hall, No.1, Rangapillai Street, Puducherry, where a sincere group of seekers will introspect and deliberate, individually and collectively, on this topic in the Light of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
For more information and accommodation, write to The Secretary - Women's Council Sri Aurobindo Society, Puducherry - 605 002 mentioning the type of accommodation required and in what range.
The centres and branches of Sri Aurobindo Society are requested to send one or two representatives to participate actively in the Seminar which will keep them in organising such programmes in their own areas.

Some Special Days in September 2007
4 September 2007 - Sri Krishna Janmashtami
Shri Sraddhalu, speaking on "The Work Ahead"
Janmashtami (also known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami) is a festival dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna to commemorate his birth on this earth. This year it falls on 4 September, and on this day during midnight, the whole story of Sri Krishna's birth will be enacted by the devotees in their houses and many delicacies prepared out of milk and curd will be distributed as prasad (food made sacred by offering to God) to everyone.
In his letters to sadhaks, Sri Aurobindo mentions:
Krishna as a godhead is the Lord of Ananda, Love and Bhakti; as an incarnation, he manifests the union of wisdom (Jnana) and works and leads the earth-evolution through this towards union with the Divine by Ananda, Love and Bhakti.
The boy with the flute is Sri Krishna, the Lord descended into the world-play from the divine Ananda; his flute is the music of the call which seeks to transform the lower ignorant play of mortal life and bring into it and establish in its place the Lila of his divine Ananda.
15 September 2007 - Ganesha Chaturthi
Shri Ganehsa
This year Ganesha Chaturthi, the birthday of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha, will be celebrated on the 15 September. In India all important tasks start with the worship of Ganesha -the son of the Supreme Mother and god of material knowledge and wealth - so that the work undertaken may be free from all obstacles. In his letters Sri Aurobindo writes:
Ganesha is the Power that removes obstacles by the force of Knowledge;…
Ganesha (among other things) is the Devata of spiritual Knowledge.
Here is the Mother's first encounter with Lord Ganesha, as narrated by herself sometime during 1958:
We had a meditation (this was more than thirty years ago) in the room where 'Prosperity' is now distributed. There were eight or ten of us, I believe. We used to make sentences with flowers; I arranged the flowers, and each one made a sentence with the different flowers I had put there. And one day when the subject of prosperity or wealth came up, I thought (they always say that Ganesh is the god of money, of fortune, of the world's wealth), I thought, 'Isn't this whole story of the god with an elephant trunk merely a lot of human imagination?' Thereupon, we meditated. And who should I see walk in and park himself in front of me but a living being, absolutely alive and luminous, with a trunk that long ... and smiling! So then, in my meditation, I said, 'Ah! So it's true that you exist!' - 'Of course I exist! And you may ask me for whatever you wish, from a monetary standpoint, of course, and I will give it to you!' So I asked. And for about ten years, it poured in, like this (gesture of torrents). It was incredible. I would ask, and at the next Darshan, or a month or several days later, depending, there it was.

Essays on Sri Aurobindo's Savitri

NEW PUBLICATIONS
Savitri, The Mother
Essays on Sri Aurobindo's SAVITRI - The Book of Yoga— Prof. M. V. Seetaraman ISBN: 978-81-903346-1-7 Publisher: Savitri Bhavan, Auroville Binding: Soft Cover Pages: 178Price: Rs 125
The thirteen articles collected in this book were originally published in the journal The Advent from 1962 to 1965. The premise of the series of essays is to demonstrate the correspondences between Sri Aurobindo's description of the Yoga of Savitri, as seen in Cantos I, IV, V, VI and VII of Book VII, and the Mother's record of her own experiences in her Prayers and Meditations. Combining a detailed explication of lines from these Cantos with an examination of his broader themes, the author gives his insights on such topics as the personality of Savitri as an avatar, her encounter with the three aspects of the World Mother, or the triple soul-forces, and her work to build the bridge for man to cross over into the highest realm of consciousness and realise the new Gnostic Soul.
Towards New Age
— R. Y. Deshpande ISBN: 978-81-86413-46-3 Publisher: Sri Mira Trust, Puducherry Binding: Soft Cover Pages: 309 Price: Rs 150
Presently we are passing through the Age of Reason and perhaps preparing ourselves, without being aware of it, for the Age of luminous Intuition. The urge of the spirit of man for God-Light-Freedom-Immortality is certainly there, but it is not sufficiently deep-rooted. There is the positive human potential and it has to get firmed up in the spiritual values and possibilities. The present work is an attempt to discover and promote these values and possibilities in the vision of Sri Aurobindo and the dynamics of the Mother’s executive Force. There has to be a conviction that the culmination of the social development into the Age of the ageless Spirit is the secret yearning and motivating force behind the evolutionary Nature’s long painstaking and patient working. Humanity’s conscious participation in it will assuredly hasten this triumph and this glory. To make us perceive some of these elements is the sincere effort of Towards New Age.
Sri Aurobindo's Treatment of Hindu Myth
— J. Feys Publisher: Firma Klm Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata Binding: Hard Cover Pages: 56 Price: Rs 30
Sri Aurobindo was a modern reinterpreter of the entire range of traditional Hindu culture. Not only did he propose his own original interpretation of the nation's heritage, but also wrote extensive commentaries on the vast mass of Sanskrit literature. As essential component of the culture he professed to revitalise was Hindu myth, which he salvaged in its entirety. This book, published in 1983 and now available with SABDA, brings out a perhaps less-recognised facet of Sri Aurobindo's work manifest in all his literary genres—his creative reinterpretation of Hindu myth.
